SOJA – “I Found You” Background:
SOJA released their 6th studio album, Poetry In Motion, which includes 11 brand-new tracks and zero guest appearances. When we spoke with lead singer Jacob Hemphill this summer, he said that they wanted to put out a record that was all them, hoping to take the same approach they took with 2009’s Born In Babylon as they did with Poetry In Motion in writing, arranging, producing and recording it all in the same room.
Hemphill explains, “‘Poetry in Motion’ is about us, the human race. We’re beautiful. We’re the caretakers of this earth and everything that lives here, calls it home. But something is wrong. Something in us is lost. That’s the focus – how to get back to the beauty and away from… well, this.”

When we contacted SOJA about featuring a song on the record I don’t think they knew we had “I Found You” in mind. It was a pleasant surprise when that was the first song they suggested we feature. It’s the last track on the record, and is a stripped down mellow thank you song with Jacob’s vocals sitting on top, thanking fans for their support. It’s pop meets reggae meets camp-fire.
The song was discussed at length when our own Brian Glaser spoke with Jacob Hemphill:
“It’s basically about how, sometimes, you get extremely lost in life and you don’t really understand. I can always look at the guys in SOJA when I do lose someone, and know that my destiny is sort of playing out as it should. And that’s why at the end I quote ‘Open My Eyes,’ ‘Rest of My Life,’ ‘True Love,’ and ‘I Don’t Wanna Wait’ because those are some of the songs that have kind of put us all over the world as a group together. And I owe everything to those songs, and to these people, and to the fans. It was my way of saying thanks to everybody for this beautiful experience. Its been awesome, and its not even over! I’m lucky – that’s kind of what that song is saying. I’m a lucky guy.”

One of the things that stood out in Brian’s interview with Jacob is how he is maximizing his platform to write meaningful songs with depth, telling Brian: “I always try to use the microphone like a responsibility. I made a decision a long time ago not to do drug songs, or hookup songs or any of that stuff. I felt like I have a really rare opportunity here. People listen to me – especially kids and teenagers, they listen to what I write.”

SOJA Background:
Shortly after singer/guitarist Jacob Hemphill had returned to the United States from Africa, the roots of SOJA sprouted. In Washington D.C., Bassist Bobby Lee and Hemphill became friends going into the first grade, finding in common their mutual loves for hip hop and reggae. Throughout their middle and high school days the two transformed their loves for music, even performing at middle school talent shows. By the end of high school, Hemphill, Lee, Ryan Berty (drums), Kenneth Brownell (percussion) and Patrick O’Shea (keyboards) were performing at local venues and gigs, and the dream began snowballing. They made it their goal to hit the road after the last of them graduated. That was 20-years-ago. The group has grown to include lead-guitarist & vocalist Trevor Young and a horn section that includes Hellman Escorcia on saxophone and Rafael Rodriguez on trumpet. The group would go on to be a 2x GRAMMY-nominated band with 6 studio records, accumulated 7 million online followers in addition to over 300 million YouTube views while touring internationally as well as sharing the stage with such groups as Dave Matthews Band, Dirty Heads, Rebelution, Michael Franti, Nahko and more.

1. Moving Stones
Written by Jacob Hemphill
you say “there’s gotta be a better way” for you
but see, you’re staying in the same old groove
ignoring the fight and blind to the light,
you’re hoping and praying, but never making that move
the earth’s just moving in the way it does
spinning in the space waiting for your want
do you really need it, what you “really needed,”
slipping from your touch
but see, you’re staying in the same old groove
ignoring the fight and blind to the light,
you’re hoping and praying, but never making that move
the earth’s just moving in the way it does
spinning in the space waiting for your want
do you really need it, what you “really needed,”
slipping from your touch
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
can you put it down, never pick it back up…
hate it so much that you give it all up…
finding that center, do you remember,
when you were a kid all you need was love
I guess that kid will never be back again
looking around at every one of your friends…
some are doing “worse” so you are feeling “better”…
never getting up
hate it so much that you give it all up…
finding that center, do you remember,
when you were a kid all you need was love
I guess that kid will never be back again
looking around at every one of your friends…
some are doing “worse” so you are feeling “better”…
never getting up
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
there’s a little secret in every one
we say “only if we knew what it was…”
then we do nothing
calling it something…
suffering alone is so much fun
listening to voices, hearing it loud
only real point is to drown it out…
do you really want it, what you really “wanted”
…start right now
we say “only if we knew what it was…”
then we do nothing
calling it something…
suffering alone is so much fun
listening to voices, hearing it loud
only real point is to drown it out…
do you really want it, what you really “wanted”
…start right now
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up
you could do it right now, let a little light out
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
we’re moving stones
looking for the inside remembering the real life
we covered up…
2. I Can’t Stop Dreaming
Written by Jacob Hemphill
I’m wide awake and it’s still moving in my head
all these questions that I have
from all the rooms that I have left
little children have a way of loving hard until they don’t
growing old is getting older,
every minute that I come to know, I’m…
all these questions that I have
from all the rooms that I have left
little children have a way of loving hard until they don’t
growing old is getting older,
every minute that I come to know, I’m…
waiting for my conscience calling
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
and I can’t stop dreaming…
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
and I can’t stop dreaming…
Soja Poetry In Motion Album
sometimes I just start to forget it
I let it fade out for a second…
and then it comes back, and it’s a whirlwind,
tearing up inside of me…
I never succeed to explain it
the words, they escape me in it…
never ever leaving what was long ago planted in my brain
it stays, it just…
I let it fade out for a second…
and then it comes back, and it’s a whirlwind,
tearing up inside of me…
I never succeed to explain it
the words, they escape me in it…
never ever leaving what was long ago planted in my brain
it stays, it just…
waiting for my conscience calling
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
and I can’t stop dreaming…
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
and I can’t stop dreaming…
all the changes but still everything’s the same
there’s this world that can’t withstain
so there’s a purpose in our pain
it’s calling me inside my heart from whence I came
looking down over my shoulder
I feel it falling down again, like I’m just…
there’s this world that can’t withstain
so there’s a purpose in our pain
it’s calling me inside my heart from whence I came
looking down over my shoulder
I feel it falling down again, like I’m just…
waiting for my conscience calling
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
listening to hear me talking
slowing down the rate of motion
focusing inside an ocean
catching myself falling over
looking backwards seeing no one
walking through this lucid dream again
well I’m waiting for my conscience calling now
slowing down the rate of motion
and I’ve been holding on to what is gone
to what I lost through this lucid dream again
slowing down the rate of motion
and I’ve been holding on to what is gone
to what I lost through this lucid dream again
3. Tried My Best
Written by Jacob Hemphill
I feel it when my dreams tear right into my soul
feel it in my heart when my blood runs cold
see it in the nighttime, always in the rain…
hear it in the thunder and lightning
take me to my memory, take me to the start,
come in through the window, tearing me apart
feel it in the nightmare, always in the rain
see it in the memory coming back again and
I always said…
feel it in my heart when my blood runs cold
see it in the nighttime, always in the rain…
hear it in the thunder and lightning
take me to my memory, take me to the start,
come in through the window, tearing me apart
feel it in the nightmare, always in the rain
see it in the memory coming back again and
I always said…
the only thing that ever made sense
is when I can feel it
the only thing that ever made sense
is just to carry and conceal it all
just know that I tried my best
in the only way that I knew how
I’m still doing it now, I’m still doing it now
cause I’m still doing it now…
is when I can feel it
the only thing that ever made sense
is just to carry and conceal it all
just know that I tried my best
in the only way that I knew how
I’m still doing it now, I’m still doing it now
cause I’m still doing it now…
get me to the stage now, put us in the light
make it feel real and make it feel right
floating down the concrete, flying in the sky
I think we found the bloodstream of our life
play me in the particle, put me in the mix…
make it like it used to, make it all fit
I really miss the old days, covered in light
I wanna feel closer, I wanna feel alive
and I always tried
make it feel real and make it feel right
floating down the concrete, flying in the sky
I think we found the bloodstream of our life
play me in the particle, put me in the mix…
make it like it used to, make it all fit
I really miss the old days, covered in light
I wanna feel closer, I wanna feel alive
and I always tried
the only thing that ever made sense
is when I can feel it
the only thing that ever made sense
is just to carry and conceal it all
just know that I tried my best
in the only way that I knew how
and I’m still doing it now, I’m still doing it now
and I’m still doing it now…

4. More
Written by Jacob Hemphill
you see the money like the dollar is your “friend” now
you see the human as the “race” that you can win now
you see the animal as “food” to fill the plate now
you see your brother as the “reason” you can hate now
you see the “family” as little, two or three, so
you treat the rest as if they aren’t even people
you trust the “government” plus you trust the “steeple”
get on your knees nothing’s “equal”
you see the human as the “race” that you can win now
you see the animal as “food” to fill the plate now
you see your brother as the “reason” you can hate now
you see the “family” as little, two or three, so
you treat the rest as if they aren’t even people
you trust the “government” plus you trust the “steeple”
get on your knees nothing’s “equal”
we call “more, more, more…”
they say until you got it all, you got nothing at all
they cry “more, more, more…”
just gimme “more, more, more…”
and so I’m sayin who are we and what have we become
And what do I keep dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
they say until you got it all, you got nothing at all
they cry “more, more, more…”
just gimme “more, more, more…”
and so I’m sayin who are we and what have we become
And what do I keep dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
what if we treated our daughters like our sons more..
and told em living off your looks will leave you done for…
and told em truth is in yourself and you’re the reason…
but we give em makeup and tell em “this you should believe in”
it’s been a hundred years and these girls are not free
we let em vote and tell em that should make em happy
but they see that sex and prostitution’s what you’re after…
you turn our sister to a beautiful disaster
and told em living off your looks will leave you done for…
and told em truth is in yourself and you’re the reason…
but we give em makeup and tell em “this you should believe in”
it’s been a hundred years and these girls are not free
we let em vote and tell em that should make em happy
but they see that sex and prostitution’s what you’re after…
you turn our sister to a beautiful disaster
“more, more, more”
it happens “more, more, more”
they say until you got it all, you got nothing at all
they cry “more, more, more”
just gimme “more, more, more…”
and so I’m sayin who are we and what have we become
And what do I keep dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
can’t stop dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
it happens “more, more, more”
they say until you got it all, you got nothing at all
they cry “more, more, more”
just gimme “more, more, more…”
and so I’m sayin who are we and what have we become
And what do I keep dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
can’t stop dreaming of…
what am I dreaming of…
what if the pace was slower like the four seasons, and…
what if “1 Love” was something every 1 believed in, and …
what if a slap across the left was just a reason
to give the right every time the left was bleeding, and…
what if the leaders were leadership that we needed, and…
what if the bible learned to speak instead of preaching it,
live “love your brother like yourself” instead of “heathens,” and…
what if this world was a beautiful place to be in…
what if earth was a beautiful world to live in, and…
what if that was “more”…
what if “1 Love” was something every 1 believed in, and …
what if a slap across the left was just a reason
to give the right every time the left was bleeding, and…
what if the leaders were leadership that we needed, and…
what if the bible learned to speak instead of preaching it,
live “love your brother like yourself” instead of “heathens,” and…

5. Fire In The Sky
Written by Jacob Hemphill
we just move on a minute, we go first on a second
if the sky is the limit, our earth is the blessing
every second you’re in it, every minute your guessing
calls for celebration into this life that you’re slipping
slip sliding away and you know it’s never enough
you hear it beg you for more and so on your knees you get up

in every city we live in, we take the chance that we’re given
we take the day at it’s word, we speak the truth that we listen
we make the dreamer the real, we make the rebel the god
we make the hero forever and make each other the law

6. Everything To Me
Written by Jacob Hemphill
I wish I could tell you to turn around and come back home
but you would laugh at me, and point to stars
and say there’s nothing wrong
that I don’t understand – it’s not my fault,
it’s just my point of view
my vision’s blurry now, but I can’t wait till I see it too…
but you would laugh at me, and point to stars
and say there’s nothing wrong
that I don’t understand – it’s not my fault,
it’s just my point of view
my vision’s blurry now, but I can’t wait till I see it too…
the universe, the beauty in the difference
in all the love we found…
all those problems that just chase us all around…
it all disappears, and peace becomes that truth that’s in us all…
and what you’re running from…
is way up here, and we’re friends now
in all the love we found…
all those problems that just chase us all around…
it all disappears, and peace becomes that truth that’s in us all…
and what you’re running from…
is way up here, and we’re friends now
I wanna be just like you in my own peculiar way
half my life trying to fight you, and
half my life trying to make you stay
half my life despite you
Rest of my life to hit “replay,” and
everything you said to me is everything I want to be
half my life trying to fight you, and
half my life trying to make you stay
half my life despite you
Rest of my life to hit “replay,” and
everything you said to me is everything I want to be
you’re everything to me
you’re everything I want to be
you’re everything to me
you’re everything I want to be
you’re everything to me
I wish I could call you and write these words with someone else
it used to be unreal to look across the table at myself
and I’m at a loss for words when losing you will not leave me alone
I’m at a disadvantage
I always called you home
it used to be unreal to look across the table at myself
and I’m at a loss for words when losing you will not leave me alone
I’m at a disadvantage
I always called you home
the universe, the beauty in the difference
in all the love we found…
all those problems that just chase us all around…
it all disappears, and peace becomes that truth that’s in us all…

7. Life Support
Written by Jacob Hemphill
six days of work and on the seventh he rests
of course – god is a man, only a man would do this
of course – ‘’he’’ ‘’created’’ ‘’women’’ for ‘’man’’ himself
for: kids, and a rib. and for nothing else.
of course – ‘’mary’’ is a virgin, that’s what we say
we ‘’love’’ when it never really was that way
of course – sodom and gomorrah is going to ‘’hell’’
we can’t even start to understand ourselves
of course – we’re going to war over love itself…
of course – ‘’god’’ is a bullet flying low overhead
of course – our enemies just don’t know god…
of course – that’s the reason that we’re going to war…
but people remember jesus and mother teresa
and bob marley lives instead of the preacher
you look in your heart, you can see the secret that
we needed love to live, so we’re on life support.
it’s just life support, it’s only life support…
the president is on a mission of war
forgetting any of the reasons that we needed him for, and
the priests and the shieks and the czars and the rabbis,
smile bright while we close the door, but
jesus wasn’t a ‘’christian’’
mohammed wasn’t a ‘’muslim,’’ and
all we take is whatever it is we want from the news
as they interview showing islam, and we say
‘’killing in the name of god is so fucking wrong.’’
but then we kill for the oil and bury the teachers
love what we’re taught to love by the preachers, and
we seen it so much we fucking bought the t-shirt, and
‘’we know we’re right, so we don’t do no research.’’
stop it, we should just goddamn drop it:
two thousand years of the same old hypocrisy is all I see
when all I need is love and peace
so I’m on life support, it’s just life support…
of course – god is a man, only a man would do this
of course – ‘’he’’ ‘’created’’ ‘’women’’ for ‘’man’’ himself
for: kids, and a rib. and for nothing else.

‘’we know we’re right, so we don’t do no research.’’
stop it, we should just goddamn drop it:
two thousand years of the same old hypocrisy is all I see
when all I need is love and peace
so I’m on life support, it’s just life support…
we teach competition and to beat them all
we teach accumulation, but what’s in your heart
is love and compassion for all your kin –
every single movie ends you see the good guys win
every indescribable song that you feel in your heart
stronger than accumulation is compassion and love
hard wired down to the core we are
hard wired down to the cornea
we teach accumulation like it’s what we want
when children grow up I see them acting just like us
but our vision is a glitch and it’s a fault to us
we never listen to our hearts, it’s just the thoughts we trust.
but if you listen to your soul, you start to see it around,
the weakest part of us, that’s the strongest part right now…
and it’s a testament to both testaments:
never say you’re fixing it, just to make it lesser than…
we teach accumulation, but what’s in your heart
is love and compassion for all your kin –
every single movie ends you see the good guys win

like life support
8. Bad News
Written by Trevor Young and Jacob Hemphill
why turn on my TV when it’s only tragedy
why turn on my radio when the headlines hurt you know
it’s getting old, it’s getting… old
it’s getting old, it’s getting… old
the bad news…
why turn on my radio when the headlines hurt you know
it’s getting old, it’s getting… old
it’s getting old, it’s getting… old
the bad news…
i’m guessing tolerance has got the better chance of
removing much of the damage before it shows up
we elect our future to be the bad luck
Bad News gets given we throw our hands up
and this country is two pieces and it’s evident
the lowest common denominator is president
there’s only half of us that feel this way too
but every one of us headed for the Bad News
removing much of the damage before it shows up
we elect our future to be the bad luck
Bad News gets given we throw our hands up
and this country is two pieces and it’s evident
the lowest common denominator is president
there’s only half of us that feel this way too

people say where are you from and I tell em D.C.
but I could say European it’s just as easy
but I could say mother earth cause if you break it down
we were the ones who put every border on the ground
we made religion for good but now it separates
we made words so everybody communicates
but now the language is hatred and it is blame too
we are all immigrants sorry for the Bad News

we were the ones who put every border on the ground
we made religion for good but now it separates
we made words so everybody communicates
but now the language is hatred and it is blame too
we are all immigrants sorry for the Bad News
it’s always an issue and it’s always a problem
we need solutions, we need to solve it
it’s always an issue and it’s always a problem
we need solution, we need to solve it
we need solutions, we need to solve it
it’s always an issue and it’s always a problem

9. To Whom It May Concern
Written by Robert ‘Bobby Lee’ Jefferson
to whom it may concern and for those who are listening
we’re fighting hard but it’s not with our fist and
recruiting soldiers livicated to this mission
to dissect this bullshit system
to whom it may concern and for those who are listening
we’re fighting hard but it’s not with our fist and
recruiting soldiers livicated to this mission
to dissect this bullshit system
we’re fighting hard but it’s not with our fist and
recruiting soldiers livicated to this mission
to dissect this bullshit system
to whom it may concern and for those who are listening
we’re fighting hard but it’s not with our fist and
recruiting soldiers livicated to this mission
to dissect this bullshit system
trying to ride the thin line of divide between the rivers and the highways
pedaling strong moving on so get on or get out of I’n’I way
when we realize that the most high divine
is around and inside we
then we can stand tall we won’t fall
cause we’re all Soldiers of Jah Army
pedaling strong moving on so get on or get out of I’n’I way
when we realize that the most high divine
is around and inside we
then we can stand tall we won’t fall
cause we’re all Soldiers of Jah Army
to whom it may concern and for those who are listening
we’re fighting hard but its not with our fist and

to dissect this bushwick system
to whom it may concern and for those who are listening

deception from those who sit up on dem thrones
just like Trump in his tower
they say they’re friends of me some imply family
when they call them big brother
they tell us we’re free but they’re spying on me
every minute on the hour
their satellites fly as their eye in the sky
cause they’re all fucking cowards
just like Trump in his tower
they say they’re friends of me some imply family
when they call them big brother
they tell us we’re free but they’re spying on me
every minute on the hour
their satellites fly as their eye in the sky

10. Sing To Me
Written by Jacob Hemphill and Trevor Young
I move along with my guitar, never goes away
she is with me through the night
and in the morning she stays
I wash away like yesterday, float down the stream
through all my ways
she accompanies my steps in all my days
we speak a language of our own every minute of the day
we get along into the song
I find her heart and I make it strong, and she backs me up
when everyone has gone away, and she sings to me…
she is with me through the night
and in the morning she stays
I wash away like yesterday, float down the stream
through all my ways
she accompanies my steps in all my days
we speak a language of our own every minute of the day
we get along into the song
I find her heart and I make it strong, and she backs me up
when everyone has gone away, and she sings to me…
she never goes very far
she stays around no matter what I am doing
she is there for me
I know that she don’t know the words
I don’t care, I kinda like it
less the talking, a little more the melody
she reaches out without a touch
she knows that whatever I love
ends up broken in the past and out the door
I have broken her before I let her fall onto the floor
I call it character and I love her more
When she sings to me…
she stays around no matter what I am doing
she is there for me
I know that she don’t know the words
I don’t care, I kinda like it
less the talking, a little more the melody
she reaches out without a touch
she knows that whatever I love
ends up broken in the past and out the door
I have broken her before I let her fall onto the floor
I call it character and I love her more
When she sings to me…
11. I Found You
Written by Jacob Hemphill
Soja Poetry In Motion Rare
we could spend more time together, I’m talking to you
and you could get out of that mirror
and we could talk this through
cause my eyes open, open wide, and all I see is truth
that in this life I’ll always find you
I’ll find you…
and you could get out of that mirror
and we could talk this through
cause my eyes open, open wide, and all I see is truth
that in this life I’ll always find you
I’ll find you…
the days are passing faster than I ever hoped they would
I watch as we grow apart and we separate too
but my hearts open, open wide, and all I need is you
I feel it in the rain and in the roots, it’s in the root
I’ll find you…
I watch as we grow apart and we separate too
but my hearts open, open wide, and all I need is you
I feel it in the rain and in the roots, it’s in the root
I’ll find you…
the seasons changing one by one and we are changing too
we are circling the stars and we are god’s own proof
my minds open, open wide, and as I read the news
we become the cancer that we’re trying to remove
I’ll find you…
we are circling the stars and we are god’s own proof
my minds open, open wide, and as I read the news
we become the cancer that we’re trying to remove
I’ll find you…
70 years in this life and what we got to show
we built a family of millions with millions more to go
my eyes open, open wide, I wake myself for you
to thank you for the memories that grew
it’s all because of you
I found you…
we built a family of millions with millions more to go
my eyes open, open wide, I wake myself for you
to thank you for the memories that grew
it’s all because of you
I found you…
if I could spend the Rest Of My Life with my people
I would do it over and over again’
I found you.
I would do it over and over again’
I found you.
just like the land that bares the name africa
True Love is on my mind
I found you.
True Love is on my mind
I found you.
I Don’t Wanna Wait today for something
that might never ever show it’s face again
I found you.
that might never ever show it’s face again
I found you.
I Open My Eyes each morning I rise
to find the truth…
I found you.
to find the truth…
I found you.
